They are a primitive group of plants living through the Jurassic period. Cycads are rare and endangered and today only a handful of species still exist in the wild.
Cycads have the resemblance similar to palms and ferns. They do not bare flowers but produce cones. It is these cones that differentiate males from females. Cones of various species differ in size, shape and colour. Male cones produce pollen while female cones produce large ovules. When fertilized, seeds from these female cones germinate and seedlings are formed over a period of time.
